Handbound journals & sketchbooks, contemporary sculpture
Pam Fortner is a self-taught artist, maker and bookbinder best known for her nature-inspired sculpture and bespoke journals. She works in steel, paper, ceramic and found materials to create artworks that evoke the patterns and forms of the natural world. As a native New Mexican living near her birthplace, she closely observes the desert environment to which she is deeply connected. The structure, growth patterns and rhythms of plant life serve as inspiration and a departure point for her sculptures. She has developed a unique bookbinding technique to create paper constructs that, united with steel architectures, create unexpected sculptural forms. Pam is also well known for her hand bound journals and sketchbooks. These unique books have traveled the world in the hands of her collectors. Pam’s artwork resides in numerous public, corporate and library collections. Her award-winning work has been exhibited throughout the United States. She has received commissions from the Denver Art Museum and Foothills Art Center. She lives in the wild desert of Abiquiú, New Mexico.
