High Desert Folk Contemporary Paintings
I’m drawn to the landscapes of Northern New Mexico, the shifting skies, painted hillsides, winding arroyos, and quiet moments of stillness that seem to hold memory. Long before Abiquiú became my home, it was a place that deeply shaped me. I find endless inspiration in the rhythm of the high desert and the way the light transforms the landscape from one hour to the next.
I am a self-taught artist who creates small-scale acrylic paintings inspired by both observation and imagination, often in a contemporary folk and illustrative style that leans into color, symbolism, and emotion. My work isn’t about capturing a specific place exactly as it appears. Instead, I’m interested in translating a feeling, whether it’s wonder, nostalgia, solitude, reverence, or the quiet magic that seems to live in this landscape. Through expressive skies, simplified forms, and vibrant desert palettes, I hope each painting offers a small window into the spirit of the Southwest.
I am the Curator and Co-Owner of Abiquiú Dome Gallery & Shop, a mother-daughter gallery I run alongside my mother, metal artist Connie B. Burkhart. I also serve on the board of the Abiquiú Arts Council, where I support local artists and help organize the annual Abiquiú Studio Tour and other events. My own creative practice continues to evolve alongside the community and landscape that inspire me every day.
