Magic Realism from angelic to mundane
Lopez began making art and early age and was taught traditional basket weaving by his grandfather. Though his sculptures are an outgrowth of Native folkways, during childhood, utilitarian form gave way to fantastic, non-utilitarian shapes, pushing the him toward becoming an artist. Painting came after sculpting as a means of translating visual imaginings that did not lend themselves to sculpture into two dimensional works. It is not very common to find an artist that is equally adept in two and three dimensional media; Lopez equally gifted in both. Though aesthetics are an important consideration, perhaps it’s best to say that symbolic meanings are the preeminent force in Lopez’ work. His visual language is not arcane, rather the images and their place within a scene are, on one hand, easily understood, and on the other hand, open enough to invite the viewer to make his or her own interpretations of the deeper and more personal meanings contained therein. In this, Lopez is not telling the viewer what should be seen, thought or felt, he is inviting the viewer to enter into a dialogue. Visual storytelling is, for Lopez, a means of conveying the continuity of story-lines between media, between past and present, above and below, and what lay in the in between. Symbolic language is expressed stylistically, acting as a through-line tying together all of Lopez’ work.
