Abiquiú Dome is a beloved landmark gallery and shop nestled near the heart of Abiquiú, inviting art lovers and seekers of the extraordinary to experience a space where creativity, craftsmanship, and hospitality converge. Housed in a distinctive adobe dome, the gallery showcases striking Southwestern-inspired metal art by owner Connie B. Burkhart alongside a thoughtfully curated selection of work by regional artists and artisans.
Curator and Managing Partner Becca Fisher, Connie’s daughter, brings fresh perspective, passion, and her artistic voice to this mother-daughter venture. This year marks Becca’s first time participating in the Abiquiú Studio Tour as an artist, featuring her small-work acrylic desert landscape paintings inspired by the land that surrounds the Dome.
Visitors will find original art, handmade goods, and meaningful keepsakes that reflect the spirit of the Southwest. Visitors are invited to linger in the welcoming outdoor spaces and enjoy conversation with Connie and Becca in this art-filled, soulful setting. I was 6 feet tall by the time I turned 12. That summer, I slept for 2 months straight but when I finally woke up, the pains in my legs were gone. So I began moving furniture. My high school ceramics teacher gave me a piece of plywood and an x-acto knife and showed me how to cut the plywood for relief printmaking. Years later, I figured out how to print the cuts. My first attempt was inking the wood and then having someone drive a car over the inked wood on paper. This technique had mixed results. mostly bad. But all things are in some form, a state of becoming…. I tune and repair pianos and reed organs, raise chickens, turkeys and quail and am currently working on a book of woodcuts about the process of leaving nature to go drive a car.

Beautiful artwork from an Abiquiu native
I was born in Espanola and raised in Abiquiu. My father was born, raised and lived in Abiquiu. I attended parochial and elementary school in Abiquiu and junior and high school in Espanola. I participated in archeological digs during the summer months while in high school with Charlie Carrillo. I received a master’s degree in Southwest Studies from New Mexico Highlands University. My mother taught me at a young age to embroider and my grandmother taught me to crochet. I am also a weaver, and my work was displayed at the New Mexico State Fair many years ago. I enjoy creating art through embroidery and crochet that people will enjoy.

My feathered gourd masks are a complicated process of first choosing a gourd, followed by laying out the cut feathers on a table. The feathers decide the colors that are painted on the gourd’s face. I finish by adding horsehair and leather thongs.

Magic Realism from angelic to mundane
Lopez began making art and early age and was taught traditional basket weaving by his grandfather. Though his sculptures are an outgrowth of Native folkways, during childhood, utilitarian form gave way to fantastic, non-utilitarian shapes, pushing the him toward becoming an artist. Painting came after sculpting as a means of translating visual imaginings that did not lend themselves to sculpture into two dimensional works. It is not very common to find an artist that is equally adept in two and three dimensional media; Lopez equally gifted in both. Though aesthetics are an important consideration, perhaps it’s best to say that symbolic meanings are the preeminent force in Lopez’ work. His visual language is not arcane, rather the images and their place within a scene are, on one hand, easily understood, and on the other hand, open enough to invite the viewer to make his or her own interpretations of the deeper and more personal meanings contained therein. In this, Lopez is not telling the viewer what should be seen, thought or felt, he is inviting the viewer to enter into a dialogue. Visual storytelling is, for Lopez, a means of conveying the continuity of story-lines between media, between past and present, above and below, and what lay in the in between. Symbolic language is expressed stylistically, acting as a through-line tying together all of Lopez’ work.

Desert Spirit Landscapes Small Work Acrylics
As Curator and Co-Owner of Abiquiú Dome Gallery & Shop, I bring both creative vision and heart to my art and my work in the community. My deep-rooted connection to Abiquiú—a place I visited long before it became home—runs through every aspect of my painting practice. The vast, rugged landscape, shaped by time and light, is my greatest muse, infusing my acrylic paintings with simplicity, vibrancy, and quiet wonder. Often working on small canvases, I aim to capture fleeting moments of stillness—reflections of the land’s enduring spirit. Living here, I feel the rhythm of the high desert in my work, always evolving with the seasons. In addition to my art practice (which is a blossoming new adventure), I proudly serve on the board of the Abiquiú Arts Council, where I support a thriving community of creatives and help organize the Abiquiú Studio Tour. Through both art and service, I strive to honor the timeless beauty of this place and the inspiration it generously offers.

Spanish Colonial and Southwest Woodwork
In my early days, I did mostly drawing, painting, and some sculpture work, but when I moved to New Mexico, I fell in love with woodworking. The wood itself is comforting, grounding, and beautiful. I mostly use local woods like cedar and pine. Pine is excellent for carving and cedar is just so beautiful and aromatic.my inspiration for what to make often comes from the wood itself.

LA CHAPELIERE
(French for hat-maker)
“Having always been a hat person and an avid knitter, the transition to hat-making was a natural one. The myriad colors, textures, combinations of fibers and patterns contribute to the creative process I enjoy and which help me work toward the “perfect hat”.
Each hat is hand-knitted with the finest wools: sheep, alpaca or merino.
The long hours of knitting, boiling and hand shaping the media result in a creation that is never repeated exactly.
Each hat is unique and takes approximately 200 hours to complete.
My different styles most likely reflect my growing-up days all over Europe and now my life here in the Southwest where I appreciate the colors of the sky, earth and plants that remind me a little of the colors of Provence I loved so much in my youth.
Abiquiú is my home now where I live with my husband, daughters and four adorable rescued pets.
